Size-Changing Shadows

Infrared Exhibit Interaction Sketch (from Week 8)

I just emailed this to Sebastian and John when I had the flu, but never posted it.  Here is what I sketched out as the interaction for the second iteration of my infrared vein viewer.

Although the effects were not quite as strong as I would have liked, I've tweaked the technology to give off the best possible image quality and I think the interface is a bit more clear now.

Design a Drawing Machine

After many many iterations here is the final piece "Design a Drawing Machine" 


I realized having 3 interchangeable gears made it more interactive and interesting to tinker with, but with so many degrees of freedom it gave kids too much free reign to stack gear towers and go wild. I think my previous prototype would be good as a game kit sold in stores, but for an exhibit, something that is more simple to interact with but still interactive and less complex was my goal:

Can You Make Glasses Sing? Final Prototype

Here it is!


After two anticipation-filled weeks I was finally able to get on the laser cutter and finish my acrylic casing. The case is now permanently sealed and the glasses are permanently fixtured to the base to prevent wiggling. 


In case you can't read the bottom-most caption for the figure, it says: "When exposed to vibration, the circular glass deforms slightly, oscillating quickly between a slightly taller and thinner ellipse and a slightly shorter and wider one." 

The actual sign will be twice this size (as it appears on the template document) and mounted on foam core, but it will appear in the location shown (right above the glasses). The view from above:


You can see here that the rims peek out about 1cm-half an inch so that the casing doesn't make it difficult for the user to execute the correct motion. 


Anamorphosis (Final Piece)

Since the infrared viewer technology (I'll post about that soon) isn't working as well as I had hoped, I decided to also pursue the anamorphosis piece as well.  I 3D printed a few more pieces and here is the final set up. I haven't worked with this one much over the past couple of weeks so any feedback on the interaction or label would be great.

The cylinders are glued down and the pieces are mounted on black blocks to make them easy to move around and experiment with.
